Addictions are at the heart of our societies and often constitute an unequaled source of suffering both for dependent people and for their families. This 5-course module is intended for anyone interested in the systemic and strategic therapeutic model applied to addictions and more broadly to any problem related to pleasure.

Description

The objective of this module is to teach a brief strategic approach which provides participants with a better understanding of classically recognized addictions and new forms that have appeared more recently. It is a question of moving from a static nosographic definition to an operational dynamic diagnosis of addictions. This module is to be understood as a deepening articulated around the specific problems related to pleasure (and which we usually call addictions) of the systemic and strategic model.

After a presentation of classic addictions (alcohol and drugs) at their different levels but also new addictions (addictions exacerbated by the overuse of technology), often underestimated and poorly managed, the factors that make new addictions more insidious than classic addictions, especially in adolescents and young adults.

The brief strategic approach is then expanded to understand pleasure-based compulsive behaviors and corresponding evidence-based therapeutic interventions. We will dwell on their progressive formation (use, abuse, dependence), their great resistance to change, the contemporary family dynamics that lead to inadequate management but also to secondary benefits. In addition, we will analyze the reasons why interventions based on common sense most often fail and are a hindrance to any effective and efficient intervention.

Based on evidence-based clinical research carried out in OCD clinics in Malta, Italy and Ireland as well as in different partner clinics of the Strategic Therapy Center (Arezzo, Italy) directed by Professor Gorgio Nardone, this training includes some direct and indirect interventions that have enabled adolescents and their families to gradually emerge from seemingly hopeless situations.

Objective of the module

  • Present the history and theory of classic addictions
  • Show how the brief strategic approach applies to the treatment of classic addictions and new addictions
  • Explain pleasure-based compulsive behavior
  • Address resistance to change
  • Enter into logics of self-deception
  • Clinically illustrate the different components of the approach or the different techniques used
  • Defining indirect therapy when the client refuses to come to therapy
  • Inventory contemporary family models
