      Ambivalence and Emotions

"When two or more ideas are competing"

      Dan SHORTS

Clinical Psychologist, Expert in Ericksonian Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnosis, Current Director of the Milton H. Erickson Institute in Phoenix

This two-session module allows the participant to move beyond Freudian concepts of resistance and to understand in a more dynamic and productive way why clients sometimes say they want help but then refuse to cooperate with the therapist or implement inappropriately proposed therapeutic solutions, which has the effect of sabotaging the result.

      Description

The concept of ambivalence is commonly used to describe conscious conflict, when a person is simultaneously motivated to approach something and to avoid it. In the therapeutic context, we are dealing with a more insidious form of ambivalence – when conflict pits conscious and unconscious goals and attitudes against one another. As the opposite half of the conflict escapes awareness, the client does not feel the tension and does not recognize the existence of a problem. Students will learn to recognize and deal with this set of difficult dynamics so as not to undermine the therapeutic alliance by using counterproductive arguments. During this training, participants will have the opportunity to practice individually and in groups. Demonstrations will also be offered by the trainer.

These online courses will be given in English with consecutive oral translation into French.

      Objective of the module

      • Identify productive means like the "double bind" and the "paradoxical suggestion" for an appropriate response to subconscious ambivalence.
      • Demonstrate how seemingly negative behaviors can be used to strengthen the therapeutic alliance.
      • Observe to compare attempts at control to prospects for growth to problem solving to optimize the patient's chances of change.
