      Education and training

      Education and training

To legally practice as a psychotherapist in France, it is necessary to follow specific training in psychotherapy in an establishment approved by the Ministry of Health. This training generally includes theoretical courses, supervised clinical internships and practical work. The duration of the training may vary, but it must meet high standards of quality and professionalism.

Psychotherapists may practice in a variety of settings, including private clinics, hospitals, mental health centers, schools, correctional institutions, and more. Some psychotherapists also choose to pursue independent practice, opening their own practice or working as consultants.

      Professional prospects and continuing education

The field of psychotherapy in France offers promising professional prospects, due to the growing demand for mental health services and the growing recognition of the importance of emotional well-being. However, it is important for psychotherapists to stay up to date with developments in the field, pursue continuing education , and adhere to established ethical and professional standards. Throughout their career, psychotherapists can train in different approaches to improve their practice. At LACT, many psychotherapists train in brief therapy and the systemic and strategic approach to increase their intervention skills and acquire an interactional reading of problematic situations and mental health.

      Clinical experience

Gaining practical experience is essential to becoming a competent psychotherapist. This can be achieved through supervised clinical internships, hospital-based residencies, or positions in community clinics. This experience provides a valuable opportunity to work directly with clients, apply theoretical concepts learned in the classroom, and develop skills in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.

      The supervision

Supervision by experienced practitioners is a crucial aspect of professional development in psychotherapy. It provides a space to reflect on one's practice, explore clinical challenges and receive valuable advice and guidance. Additionally, continuing education is necessary to stay up to date with the latest research, theoretical developments, and best practices in the field of psychotherapy.

The title of psychotherapist: the legislation

The use of the title psychotherapist is reserved (law no. 2004-806 of August 9, 2004 relating to public health policy, modified in 2009 and 2011) which provides in its article 52 ( to be consulted in its entirety ) that "the The use of the title psychotherapist is reserved for professionals registered in the national register of psychotherapists. » The application of this law is specified by Decree No. 2010-534 of May 20, 2010 relating to the use of the title of psychotherapist, consolidated as of May 9, 2012 . Instruction No. DGOS/RH2/2012/308 of August 3, 2012 specifies the terms of application of Decree No. 2012-695 to the situation of psychologists wishing to register on the national register of psychotherapists and terms of registration on this register.

      Develop your own therapeutic approach

The psychotherapist is a mental health professional who helps individuals overcome emotional, behavioral or relational problems using a variety of therapeutic techniques. They work with a diversity of clients, of all ages and backgrounds, and may specialize in areas such as depression, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, and more. Their work involves individual, family or group sessions, as well as assessments, diagnoses and treatment plans.

Over the course of their careers, many psychotherapists develop their own therapeutic style and approach, integrating different theories and techniques according to the needs of their clients and their own clinical experience. This ability to adapt and innovate is essential to effectively meeting the varied needs of clients and to continuing to grow as a mental health professional.
