“Prescribe” the daily drop of poison…
Nardone and Balbi (2013) offer this prescription to a patient who does not dare to come into contact with others for fear of rejection: “Every day, go out and go to a store, any store, and ask for something trivial, tiny, with the clear intention that you will be told no. This little daily “no” about a trivial, unimportant thing is the drop of poison that will gradually allow you to become immune to the poison of rejection. For example, when you are on the street and you see someone who does not have a watch, you ask them the time. Go to a store where you know they don't sell a certain item and ask for just that thing, with the very specific intention of being told no. »
The authors specify: “Here, we are apparently working on the mind, on cognition, but when the person comes out and starts asking: “Excuse me, can you give me the time?”, instead of answering sharply with a no, the other will respond with a smile: “I’m sorry but I don’t have a watch.” Or in a store, she will ask for an item, the saleswoman will start looking and apologize for not having it; or better yet, she will ask something only to be told no and she will receive a yes. It will be even more striking. It is precisely thanks to her attempts to immunize herself against the poison of rejection that she realizes that others are kind even in the face of a seemingly bizarre request, and that she ultimately does not get rejected. This was not explained to her before: she discovers it. »
