      Editorial

      Damn obsessions

Who has never been haunted by unwanted thoughts that we try to chase away and which keep coming back? Who, anxious at the idea of these thoughts returning, has not surprised themselves by submitting to protective rituals aimed at keeping these thoughts away? When these obsessive thoughts take hold with their responding compulsions, it is called obsessive compulsive disorder. Today, OCD has become one of the leading mental disorders in Western countries and its consequences on daily life can become a real handicap with serious repercussions on social life, work, etc. How to get out of the OCD trap? Claude de Scorraille, psychologist and president of LACT, director of the OCD and Anxiety Disorders Clinic in partnership with the European center the OCD Clinic, will speak on this evil of the century and on the effectiveness of brief systemic and strategic therapies to come to end of OCD.

CONFERENCE: “Efficiency of the strategic systemic approach for OCD / CBT vs Systemic Approach”

      Key points :

      • The evolution of OCD treatment involves specific treatment protocols and strategic therapeutic communication.
      • Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is effective but has high dropout rates.
      • Brief strategic therapy (BST) offers a non-confrontational, rapid change approach.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a common treatment for OCD, which aims to change destructive thought patterns through gradual exposure to anxiety triggers. However, many patients do not respond fully to CBT and the intense nature of ERP, which is an essential component, results in a high dropout rate. Brief strategic therapy (BST) offers an alternative with rapid, non-confrontational techniques that change perceptions and reactions to the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Unlike CBT, which relies on patients' conscious efforts, TBS uses strategic interventions to create emotional experiences, thereby reducing resistance and improving adherence. BST's collaborative, low-explanatory approach leverages natural resistance to transform compulsive behaviors into controlled actions, providing a promising avenue for people who struggle with traditional CBT methods.

PhD in Psychology, CTS psychologist, trainer and coach (Italy - Malta). Author of "Knowledge through change", " Obsessions, compulsions, manias: understand them and overcome them quickly" and "Le nuove dipendenze".

CONFERENCE: “An operational diagnosis for OCD and how online sessions can be ever more effective and efficient”

This intervention will emphasize the importance of a thorough operative diagnosis in order to distinguish the different variants of OCD, the underlying perception (fear of contamination, of hurting others, of doing wrong, etc.), emotion (fear or other basic sensation) and the type of compulsions (preventive, proprietary, restorative, magical, logical, with sequences, etc.) An operative diagnosis will help the therapist understand how the problem works, in order to be able to choose the most appropriate intervention, i.e. the strategies/prescriptions but also the type of language, to create a collaborative therapeutic relationship. Additionally, this intervention will also focus on how online therapy can be made more effective and efficient with OCD patients.

Clinical psychologist. Expert in Ericksonian psychotherapy and clinical hypnosis. Executive Director of the Milton H. Erickson Institute in Phoenix. He has years of experience in diverse settings such as Domestic Violence Agency, University Counseling Center and in the school sector with the Department of Special Education.

      CONFERENCE: “The use of anxiety”

The principle of utilization is a defining element of Ericksonian therapy that underlies its approach to skills-based psychotherapy. More than a technique, this principle of well-being assumes that people are best served by learning to use their personal attributes in service of a meaningful outcome in the outside world.

Conversely, people who struggle with themselves, trying to suppress powerful behavioral or emotional impulses, become weaker and more and more anxious. So, those with an anxious or compulsive mind tend to ruminate on their past mistakes and obsess about the risk of making the wrong choice in the future. From the perspective of evolutionary psychology, a predisposition to anxiety can significantly increase an organism's chances of mastering environmental challenges, if expressed at the right time, with the right intensity, and in the right way.

During this seminar, Dr. Short will discuss opportunities to help clients learn how to use both rumination and obsession, resulting in personal empowerment and a sense of competence.

She works on addictions with and without substances, and the evaluation of psychotherapeutic interventions. She conducts research on prevention systems (telephone applications, internet and distance programs) and her research is carried out in co-construction with populations of young people and adults.

      CONFERENCE: “Ruminations: a transdiagnostic process”

Kinderman's transdiagnostic model makes it possible to approach psychopathological disorders in a processual manner and facilitates the understanding of disorders going beyond the limits of strictly categorical models.

Negative repetitive thoughts (PRN) or ruminations represent a type of process present in different problems such as anxiety disorders, addictions, depressive disorders, etc.

We will discuss the particularities of these rumination processes, their evaluation and possible CBT interventions.

      CONFERENCE: “Adolescence in balance”

Adolescence, an age of transition and transformation, is a period of development full of changes and above all challenges to which young people, increasingly insecure and disoriented in their confrontation with life, unfortunately sometimes react in a dysfunctional way. Phobic, obsessive and compulsive, eating, paranoid and borderline disorders, drug addiction or Internet addiction have a strong impact on their lives and that of their families, disabling them. Increasingly heinous phenomena of violence against others and/or against oneself are recorded.

Brief strategic therapy has developed specific treatment protocols that have proven effective in these situations, involving, depending on the case, the different social actors involved in the disorder, first and foremost the family.

First a teacher in 1961, he devoted his career to the study of the family impact on the educational development of children. His research highlights the importance of the socio-family environment in academic success and advocates a diversified and adaptive educational approach. Author of several influential works, Pourtois advocates for an education that values cognitive, emotional and social experiences, in order to promote complete emancipation of the individual from an early age.

CONFERENCE: “School – I love you, neither do I”

The conference “School – I love you, me neither” by Jean-Pierre Pourtois explores the impact of the family environment on children's academic success. It reveals that family experiences predispose children to succeed or fail in school, by influencing their ability to develop cognitive, social, and emotional skills. Pourtois also discusses the importance of diversified and interactive pedagogies, both at the family and educational level, to encourage the integral development of students. It calls for an overhaul of teaching practices to respond to current educational challenges and support student development.
